Print Εἰ δέ with high confidence. The early witnesses of all text types agree, and ἴδε is explained by itacism and as a smoothing of the anacoluthon. The sense is close either way, but εἰ δέ makes 2:17–24 one long accusation.

Manuscripts (Tischendorf 8, vol. 2 (1872), pp. 372–373): εἰ δέ: ℵ A B D* E K, 1908mg, many minuscules, the Latin d e g and vg, syrsch, cop, arm, aeth, Clement, Didymus, Euthalius, John of Damascus, Theophylact, Origen (Lat.), Ambrosiaster. ἴδε: Dc L and many others, syr^p, Chrysostom, Theodoret, Oecumenius. Tischendorf quotes Theodore of Mopsuestia, who read ἴδε as a statement, not a question: οὐ κατ᾽ ἐρώτησιν … ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἀπόφασιν. K is cited as Tischendorf prints it.

Internal: ΕΙΔΕ and ΙΔΕ sounded alike (itacism). εἰ δέ opens a long condition (2:17–20) with no main clause, the question of 2:21 taking its place. ἴδε removes that break in construction, so εἰ δέ is the harder reading.
