Life and light; the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4–5)
Says ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν (en autō zōē ēn): "in him was life," and that life "was the light of men" (τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων, to phōs tōn anthrōpōn). The light "shines" (φαίνει, phainei, present), and the darkness "has not overcome it" (οὐ κατέλαβεν, ou katelaben, aorist). The active voice of καταλαμβάνω and the close parallel in John 12:35 ("so that darkness may not overtake you") favor "overcome, seize" over "comprehend" (note.language.John.1.5.katelaben).
Implies The sequence recalls Gen 1:2–5: darkness, then God's word, then light (note.language.John.1.5.light-darkness; xref.John.1.5.Gen.1.3-Gen.1.5.heb). The Word through whom all things were made is also the source of life and of the light by which people live. In John, though, the darkness is moral and spiritual (3:19), and John uses σκοτία (skotia), not the LXX's σκότος, so the link to Genesis is conceptual rather than verbal. The darkness did not defeat the light. This anticipates the conflict and the victory that the Gospel narrates (1:10–11; 16:33).
Uncertain Whether κατέλαβεν carries a deliberate double sense: the darkness neither mastered nor understood the light. The team prefers "overcome" (BSB) and allows the secondary nuance (note.language.John.1.5.katelaben). How far John intends a full "new creation" scheme here is also uncertain (note.language.John.1.5.light-darkness). Whether "the light of men" in 1:4–5 refers to the Word's work before the incarnation, to his coming (1:9), or to both is not settled by the present φαίνει, which fits either.
