Sober judgment, one body, and differing gifts (Romans 12:3–8)

Says "For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you" (12:3, BSB).

Uncertain μέτρον πίστεως (metron pisteōs, "measure of faith"). This note leans to an allotted sphere of faith-service. The ground is that God has apportioned the measure, and 12:4–8 names differing functions. Quantity of faith is the main alternative. See note.language.Rom.12.3-Rom.12.8.metron-analogia.

Says "so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another" (12:5, BSB). "We have different gifts according to the grace given us" (12:6, BSB). The list names prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy (12:6–8).

Uncertain κατὰ τὴν ἀναλογίαν τῆς πίστεως (12:6). This note leans to proportion to one's faith, in line with 12:3. Conformity to the common faith (the apostolic teaching) is the main alternative.

Uncertain Whether the seven gifts are exhaustive or illustrative, and whether they are extraordinary gifts or grace-enabled ordinary abilities. No lean is taken here. The series can bear either reading, and no further gift is named. Whether particular gifts continue is not settled in this chapter.
