How election works in Romans 8:28–30: Reformed, Arminian and Wesleyan, corporate, and Lutheran views

Uncertain How God's foreknowing and predestining in 8:29–30 work. This commentary takes no team lean. The main views follow, each with its main grounds.

Reformed. God chose particular persons to salvation, unconditionally, by his free grace, and the chain of 8:29–30 brings each of them to glory (WCF 3, src.wcf-1646; Calvin, src.calvin-romans-owen). Grounds: προέγνω has persons as its object; no link of the chain is lost; and 9:11–16 grounds election in God's purpose, not in works.

Arminian and Wesleyan. God predestines those whom he foreknows will believe, so election is conditioned on foreseen faith. Arminius reads the foreknowing of 8:29 as foreknowledge of faith in Christ, so that only those regarded as believers are predestined to be conformed to the Son (Arminius, Works 3:315, src.arminius-works-auburn-1853). Wesley's note on 8:29 takes those foreknown to be the ones conformed to the image of the Son, and his note on 8:30 denies that the chain fixes the same number at every link (Wesley, Notes, p. 400, src.wesley-notes-nt-1755). His sermon "On Predestination," on 8:29–30, reads the verses as the order in which salvation proceeds (Wesley, Works 2:38–41, src.wesley-sermon-predestination-1856). Grounds: προγινώσκω means knowing beforehand elsewhere (Acts 26:5; 2 Pet 3:17); 8:28 describes "those who love Him" (8:28, BSB); the offer is to all (10:13); and the warnings of 11:20–22.

Corporate. God chose a people in Christ, the Elect One, and individuals share that election by faith in him. Grounds: the plural "those" and the "many brothers" of 8:29; Israel's election as a people (11:1–2, 28); and election "in Him" in Eph 1:4.

Lutheran. God's election is a gracious choice to salvation in Christ, with no decree of reprobation; believers find its certainty in Christ and the gospel, not in searching God's hidden counsel, and they can still fall away. Luther's preface turns readers first to Christ and the gospel before predestination (src.luther-preface-romans). Grounds: the comfort that 8:28–39 is written to give, and 8:32, God "gave Him up for us all" (8:32, BSB).

Common ground. All four views affirm that salvation is by God's grace and that people are responsible to believe. Romans 9–11 and Ephesians 1 will carry the fuller discussion in their own notes.

Implies On every view, salvation in 8:29–30 begins in God's purpose and grace and ends in glory; it does not rest on human merit (8:28; 3:24).
