Nothing can separate us from God's love: perseverance and the possibility of apostasy (Romans 8:28–39)
Uncertain Whether a true believer can finally fall away. Romans 8:38–39 does not settle this on its own, and this commentary takes no team lean. The main views follow, each with its main grounds.
Perseverance of the saints. Those whom God has justified he will certainly keep to glory (WCF 17, src.wcf-1646; Second London Confession 17, src.2lbc-1677). Grounds: the unbroken chain of 8:29–30, which ends in "glorified"; "nor anything else in all creation" (8:39, BSB), which leaves nothing out; and God's purpose in 8:28.
Apostasy possible. A true believer can finally fall away through unbelief. This is held in different forms by Wesleyan and Arminian teachers (Wesley on 8:30, Notes, p. 400, src.wesley-notes-nt-1755), by Lutherans (Augsburg Confession 12, src.augsburg-confession-schaff), and by Roman Catholics (Council of Trent, Session 6, src.trent-session6-schaff). Grounds: the list in 8:35–39 names outside powers, not the believer's own turning away; 8:13 warns, "if you live according to the flesh, you will die" (8:13, BSB); and 11:20–22 warns that branches can be cut off.
Later notes. Hebrews 6 and 10 and John 10 will be treated in their own notes.
Implies Every view holds that God's love in Christ is sure and that no outside power can separate believers from it (8:38–39), and none treats that assurance as a license to sin (6:1–2, 15).
