The Old Testament frame: God’s creative word, Wisdom, and the tabernacle glory

Says John 1:1 opens with Ἐν ἀρχῇ (en archē, "in the beginning"), and 1:3 says all things came to be through the Word. God creates by speaking (Gen 1:3, 6, 9), and Ps 33:6 says, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made" (BSB). דְּבַר־יְהוָה (devar-YHWH, "the word of the Lord") accomplishes what God sends it to do (Isa 55:10–11; Ps 107:20).

Implies John's opening repeats LXX Gen 1:1 word for word, so a reader steeped in the OT would hear λόγος (logos, "word") first as God's creative speech. Prov 8:22–31 adds personified חָכְמָה (khokhmah, "wisdom"), present before creation, a pattern John's personal Word surpasses.

Says The Word ἐσκήνωσεν (eskēnōsen, "dwelt") among us, and "we have seen His glory" (1:14). The law came through Moses, grace and truth through Jesus Christ, and no one has ever seen God (1:17–18).

Implies These verses recall the tabernacle and Exod 33–34: ἐσκήνωσεν shares its root with σκηνή (skēnē), the LXX word for the מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan, "tabernacle"; cf. שָׁכַן, shakhan, "dwell," Exod 25:8–9). δόξα (doxa) renders כָּבוֹד (kavod), the glory that filled it (Exod 40:34–35). The Moses contrast and the unseen God (1:17–18) match Exod 33:18–20 (no one may see God's face and live). There the Lord proclaims himself "abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness" (Exod 34:6), חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת (khesed ve'emet), a likely background to "full of grace and truth."

Uncertain Whether χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια (charis kai alētheia, "grace and truth") renders Exod 34:6 directly; the LXX there reads πολυέλεος καὶ ἀληθινός.

Claims

  • SaysJohn 1:1 opens with Ἐν ἀρχῇ, and John 1:3 says all things came to be through the Word; Gen 1 and Ps 33:6, 9 present creation by God's speech.
  • SaysJohn 1:14 says the Word ἐσκήνωσεν among us and that 'we' saw his glory; 1:17–18 contrasts the law through Moses with grace and truth through Jesus Christ and says no one has ever seen God.
  • ImpliesJohn 1:14–18 recalls the tabernacle and Exod 33–34: ἐσκήνωσεν/σκηνή (מִשְׁכָּן, שָׁכַן), δόξα/כָּבוֹד (Exod 40:34–35), and the Moses contrast and unseen God (1:17–18; Exod 33:18–20) form a chain of verbal and thematic links.
  • ImpliesBecause John 1:1 repeats LXX Gen 1:1 and 1:3 makes the Word the creator, the primary background of John's λόγος is the OT word of the Lord and personified Wisdom, not Greek philosophy.
  • UncertainWhether 'grace and truth' (χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια) directly renders חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת of Exod 34:6 or is a looser echo; the LXX of Exod 34:6 has different wording.
