Deut 32:17 in the LXX: ἔθυσαν δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ θεῷ

1, pp. 411–412). δαιμονίοις (daimoniois, "to demons") renders לַשֵּׁדִים (lashedim), and καὶ οὐ θεῷ ("and not to God") renders לֹא אֱלֹהַ (lo' eloah). The last line has ἤδεισαν, "knew," where the Hebrew has שְׂעָרוּם (se'arum), "feared them" (BSB "did not fear").

Says Ps 106:37 also uses שֵׁדִים (shedim) of sacrifice to demons.

Uncertain Paul's "the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God" (1 Cor 10:20, BSB) is an allusion to this line. This note leans yes: the same pairing of "demons" and "not God," in a passage that moves from Israel's idolatry in the wilderness to pagan sacrifices (1 Cor 10:1–22), where two verses later Paul speaks of provoking the Lord to jealousy (10:22; compare Deut 32:21). The alternative is that the pairing is a common way of speaking about idol sacrifice, since Ps 106:37 uses it too.

  • Uncertain1 Cor 10:20 alludes to Deut 32:17: lean yes (demons / not God; Israel's idolatry; jealousy in 10:22); alternative, a common idiom (Ps 106:37).
