Deut 32:26–35: the enemy's boast, "their rock," and "Mine are vengeance and recompense"

Says 32:27 gives the boast the Lord will not allow: יָדֵינוּ רָמָה וְלֹא יְהוָה פָּעַל כָּל־זֹאת (yadenu ramah velo YHWH pa'al kol-zot, "Our own hand has prevailed; it was not the Lord who did all this," BSB).

Says 32:28 reads כִּי־גוֹי אֹבַד עֵצוֹת הֵמָּה (ki-goy ovad 'etsot hemmah, "for a nation lost of counsel are they," literal). The Hebrew does not name the nation. The BSB's "Israel" is an interpretive addition that is not in the Hebrew.

Uncertain Whether 32:28–29 speak of Israel or of the enemy. Israel is called foolish and unwise in 32:6, but the enemy is the subject of 32:27, and 32:31 speaks of "their rock." The team takes no lean here.

Says 32:31 says לֹא כְצוּרֵנוּ צוּרָם (lo khetsurenu tsuram, "their rock is not like our Rock," BSB).

Says 32:35 opens לִי נָקָם וְשִׁלֵּם (li naqam veshillem, "Mine are vengeance and recompense," literal). OSHB parses וְשִׁלֵּם as a noun; the BSB's "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay" renders it as a verb, and so does Onqelos, וַאֲנָא אֲשַׁלֵם ("and I will repay").
