ἐσκήνωσεν: "tabernacled" among us

Says ἐσκήνωσεν (eskēnōsen) is the aorist of σκηνόω (skēnoō, "pitch a tent, dwell"). It comes from σκηνή (skēnē, "tent"). In the LXX, σκηνή is a standard word for the tabernacle (e.g., Exod 40:34–35, where the glory fills the tent). In the NT, σκηνόω occurs only here and in Revelation (7:15; 12:12; 13:6; 21:3). Rev 21:3 joins σκηνή and σκηνώσει μετʼ αὐτῶν for God dwelling with his people. ἐν ἡμῖν means "among us." The plural connects with the eyewitness ἐθεασάμεθα ("we beheld").

Implies The context supports a tabernacle echo. δόξα (doxa, "glory") follows at once, and πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας probably echoes Exod 34:6 (חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת, khesed ve'emet). As God's glory once dwelt in the tent, it is now seen in the incarnate Word.

Caution on the "shekhinah" link: The consonants s-k-n resemble Hebrew שָׁכַן (shakhan, "dwell"), the root of מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan, "tabernacle"). The later rabbinic and targumic term שְׁכִינָה (shekhinah, "the divine presence") comes from the same root. The sound likeness may have been noticed, but the Greek word is not derived from the Hebrew, and shekhinah as a technical term is post-biblical. Treat the link as a possible resonance, not as evidence.

Uncertain Whether "tent" stresses temporariness. Koine σκηνόω often means simply "dwell," so the team does not press a temporary sense.

Claims

  • Saysσκηνόω derives from σκηνή ('tent'), the LXX term for the tabernacle; the verb is aorist.
  • ImpliesWith δόξα and the Exod 34:6 echo, the verse presents the incarnate Word as the new locus of God's dwelling glory.
  • UncertainThe force of any σκηνή/שָׁכַן sound-play and of the post-biblical shekhinah concept; resonance only, not etymology.
