μονογενής: "one and only" (etymology and usage)
Says μονογενής (monogenēs, "unique, one of a kind; only [child]") is formed from μόνος ("only") and γένος (genos, "kind, class, offspring"). The -γενής element belongs with γένος and γίνομαι, not with γεννάω (gennaō, "beget"). A formation from γεννάω would be expected to show -γέννητος. Etymologically, then, the word means "only one of its kind" rather than "only-begotten." Because γένος can mean "offspring," a family sense is natural when the word is used of children.
Usage: an only child (Luke 7:12; 8:42; 9:38; Judg 11:34 LXX). In the LXX Psalms it renders יָחִיד (yakhid, "only, solitary"): Ps 22:20 (MT 22:21; LXX 21:21); 25:16 (LXX 24:16); 35:17 (LXX 34:17). LXX Gen 22:2, 12, 16 renders the same word ἀγαπητός ("beloved"). Isaac in Heb 11:17 is μονογενής although Abraham had other sons, so uniqueness as the son of promise is the point. Of Christ: John 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 John 4:9. See lex.G3439.
Says ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός ("as of the unique one from the Father"). In 1:14 the word is used as a noun, and παρὰ πατρός supplies the father-son frame.
Implies "One and only Son" (BSB) is a sound rendering. The Son is the unique Son of the Father in a way believers, who are τέκνα (1:12), are not. "Only begotten" (KJV) goes back to the Latin unigenitus and later creedal usage.
Uncertain Some recent writers defend a "begotten" component (e.g., Irons, 2017). Eternal generation is a historic Protestant doctrine, but it does not depend on this word's etymology alone.
Claims
- Saysμονογενής is built on γένος and not on γεννάω; its core sense is 'unique, only (of a kind).'
- Implies'One and only Son' fits 1:14, where παρὰ πατρός gives the filial frame.
- UncertainWhether a 'begotten' nuance is present; the doctrine of eternal generation rests on broader grounds.
