"Dwelt among us": שָׁכַן, מִשְׁכָּן, and ἐσκήνωσεν

Says The verb שָׁכַן (shakhan, "dwell, settle, abide") and the noun מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan, "dwelling place, tabernacle") are the tabernacle's key words. In Exod 25:8–9, God says וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹכָם (veshakhanti betokham, "that I may dwell among them") and then gives the pattern of הַמִּשְׁכָּן. In Exod 40:34–35 the cloud "settled" (שָׁכַן) on the tent, and וּכְבוֹד יְהוָה מָלֵא אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן ("the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle").

Says The LXX's tabernacle word is σκηνή: τῆς σκηνῆς (Swete 25:8 = MT 25:9) and ἡ σκηνή (Swete 40:29 = MT 40:35). The LXX does not render the verb שָׁכַן in these verses with σκηνόω. Exod 25:8 (Swete 25:7) has ὀφθήσομαι ἐν ὑμῖν (ophthēsomai en hymin, "I will be seen among you"), and 29:45 has ἐπικληθήσομαι ("I will be called upon"). The LXX can use a σκην- verb for שָׁכַן, though. In the wisdom poem, אֲנִי־חָכְמָה שָׁכַנְתִּי ("I, wisdom, dwell [with prudence]," Prov 8:12) becomes ἐγὼ ἡ σοφία κατεσκήνωσα.

Implies John 1:14 ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν (eskēnōsen en hēmin) uses the verb built on σκηνή ("tabernacle"), and the next clause speaks of "glory." Together these point to the tabernacle, where God's glory dwelt among Israel. The Word is now that dwelling.

Uncertain It is often noted that the Greek consonants s-k-n resemble Hebrew sh-k-n. This is suggestive but cannot be proved. The later rabbinic term Shekhinah is post-biblical and belongs to the Historical Context Expert. The link rests on vocabulary and context, not on the sound.

Claims

  • SaysExod 25:8–9; 40:34–35 use שָׁכַן / מִשְׁכָּן for God's dwelling; LXX's noun is σκηνή, but it does not render שָׁכַן with σκηνόω there.
  • Impliesἐσκήνωσεν + δόξα in John 1:14 evokes the tabernacle where God's glory dwelt.
  • UncertainThe s-k-n / sh-k-n sound link and any Shekhinah connection are suggestive, not demonstrable.
