Punctuation of ὃ γέγονεν (1:3–4)

ὃ γέγονεν (ho gegonen, "what has come into being") stands between two clauses. Early manuscripts are barely punctuated, so editors must choose.

Option A, with 1:3 (our running text): "...without him nothing came to be that has come to be. In him was life..." Byz (Robinson–Pierpont) and TR (Scrivener 1894) punctuate this way, as do BSB, KJV, and WEB. Chrysostom defends it (Hom. Jo. 5.1). - In favor: the relative clause emphatically completes οὐδὲ ἕν. It gives a clear sense. John often opens a clause with ἐν + pronoun.

Option B, with 1:4: "...not one thing came to be. What has come to be in him was life..." This is SBLGNT's punctuation (checked: full stop after οὐδὲ ἕν, none after γέγονεν). NA28 is cited by reference only. - In favor: the "staircase" pattern of the prologue, where each line takes up the previous one (ἕν → ὃ γέγονεν → ζωή → ἡ ζωή → τὸ φῶς). It is also the earlier attested division (Ptolemy in Irenaeus, Haer. 1.8.5; Origen, Comm. Jo. 2.13; Old Syriac). - Against: the sense is difficult. Several construals are possible, e.g., "what came to be, in him was life."

Says γέγονεν is perfect ("has come into being and exists"), unlike the aorist ἐγένετο.

Implies Either way, all created things owe their existence to the Word, and life is found "in him."

Uncertain Which division John intended. The team prints A, a Supervisor decision that departs from the SBLGNT base and matches BSB. B remains a serious option (see var.John.1.3-John.1.4.ho-gegonen).

Claims

  • SaysByz and TR join ὃ γέγονεν to 1:3; SBLGNT puts the full stop after οὐδὲ ἕν and joins it to 1:4. Verse numbering keeps ὃ γέγονεν in 1:3.
  • Saysγέγονεν is perfect tense, in contrast with the aorist ἐγένετο.
  • ImpliesOn either punctuation, everything that exists came into being through the Word.
  • UncertainThe original sentence division. The team prints the 1:3 division (matching BSB) against SBLGNT, with low confidence. The 1:4 division has earlier patristic attestation.
