The creative word of the Lord: בִּדְבַר יְהוָה (Ps 33:6, 9)

Says Ps 33:6 (LXX 32:6) reads Gen 1 as the work of God's word: בִּדְבַר יְהוָה שָׁמַיִם נַעֲשׂוּ (bidvar YHWH shamayim na'asu, "by the word of the Lord the heavens were made"). The parallel line pairs the word with "the breath of his mouth," וּבְרוּחַ פִּיו (uveruakh piv). Verse 9 (LXX 32:9) puts the same idea as cause and effect: כִּי הוּא אָמַר וַיֶּהִי (ki hu' amar vayyehi, "for he spoke, and it came to be"). The noun is דָּבָר (davar, "word, matter"), here in construct with the divine name.

Says The LXX renders the phrase τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ κυρίου (tō logō tou kyriou). Here it uses λόγος, the same noun as John 1:1, for דָּבָר. Verse 9 reads αὐτὸς εἶπεν, καὶ ἐγενήθησαν.

Implies Within the OT, then, "the word of the Lord" is already named as the agent of creation in Gen 1. This is the nearest canonical background to John's ὁ λόγος as the one through whom all things were made (John 1:3).

Uncertain In Ps 33 the word is God's own speaking, not a second being. The OT supplies the category (God's effective word), and John 1:1–2 goes further when it says the Word was "with God" and "was God." It is uncertain how far Jewish readers before John had already moved toward personification. That is a Historical Context question.

Claims

  • ImpliesThe OT already identifies the word of the Lord as the agent of creation, the closest canonical background to John 1:1–3.
  • UncertainDegree of pre-Johannine personification; in Ps 33 the word is God's own speech.
