Seed, son, throne: 2 Sam 7:12–16 behind Rom 1:2–4

Says God promises David וַהֲקִימֹתִי אֶת־זַרְעֲךָ (vahaqimoti et-zar'akha, "I will raise up your offspring," 2 Sam 7:12) and וְכֹנַנְתִּי אֶת־כִּסֵּא מַמְלַכְתּוֹ עַד־עוֹלָם (vekhonanti et-kisse' mamlakhto 'ad-'olam, "I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever," 7:13). He adds אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה־לּוֹ לְאָב וְהוּא יִהְיֶה־לִּי לְבֵן (ani ehyeh-lo le'av vehu' yihyeh-li leven, "I will be his Father, and he will be My son," 7:14). In 7:16 house and kingdom וְנֶאְמַן (vene'eman, "will be made sure," Niphal) and throne נָכוֹן (nakhon, "established") forever.

Says In Swete's LXX (2 Kgdms) the lines read ἀναστήσω τὸ σπέρμα σου, ἀνορθώσω τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ ἕως εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ἐγὼ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ εἰς πατέρα καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι εἰς υἱόν, and πιστωθήσεται ὁ οἶκος αὐτοῦ. Rom 1:3 reads ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ, and 1:4 υἱοῦ θεοῦ.

Implies Rom 1:2–4 presents Jesus as the promised seed and son "promised beforehand … in the Holy Scriptures" (1:2). The promise was first fulfilled in Solomon, who built the house (7:13) and was liable to discipline (7:14b). Its "forever" points beyond him, and the Psalms and Prophets carry that hope forward (Ps 89; Isa 9:6–7 [MT 9:5–6]; Jer 23:5).

Uncertain It is uncertain whether Paul plays on LXX ἀναστήσω ("I will raise up") with ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν (1:4). In 2 Sam 7 the verb means "set up," not resurrection. The pun is possible but cannot be shown, so it gets low weight.

Claims

  • Says2 Sam 7:12–16 promises David an offspring whose throne endures forever and who will be God's son.
  • ImpliesRom 1:2–4 identifies Jesus as this promised seed and son; the 'forever' reaches beyond Solomon.
  • UncertainA wordplay ἀναστήσω (2 Kgdms 7:12) / ἀναστάσεως (Rom 1:4) is possible, not demonstrable.
