λογικὴν λατρείαν and the renewed mind (12:1–2)
Says διὰ τῶν οἰκτιρμῶν τοῦ θεοῦ (dia tōn oiktirmōn tou theou, “by the mercies of God”) grounds the appeal. Abbott-Smith glosses οἰκτιρμός (oiktirmos) as “compassion, pity”.
Says παραστῆσαι τὰ σώματα ὑμῶν θυσίαν ζῶσαν ἁγίαν εὐάρεστον τῷ θεῷ: present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. WH (and Tischendorf’s octava) reverse εὐάρεστον τῷ θεῷ (see var.Rom.12.1.euareston-order).
Uncertain τὴν λογικὴν λατρείαν ὑμῶν (tēn logikēn latreian). Abbott-Smith: λογικός “reasonable, rational” at λατρεία, Rom 12:1; λατρεία “divine service, worship”. “Spiritual” in that entry belongs to 1 Pet 2:2, not here. This note leans to reasonable or rational service, because 12:2 turns on the renewed mind. Spiritual worship is the alternative, matching the BSB “spiritual service of worship”.
Says μὴ συσχηματίζεσθε τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, ἀλλὰ μεταμορφοῦσθε τῇ ἀνακαινώσει τοῦ νοός: do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by renewal of the mind. Abbott-Smith: “to be conformed to, conform oneself to”; “to transform, transfigure”; “renewal”. The BSB says “this world,” not “age”. RP has the infinitives; TR keeps the imperatives with SBLGNT (see var.Rom.12.2.syschematizesthe and var.Rom.12.2.metamorphousthe). RP and TR add ὑμῶν after νοός, a minor unit.
Implies The present imperatives support a continuing pattern, not one act only. Aspect is not a mechanical rule; the appeal confirms the ongoing sense.
Says εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τί τὸ θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ, τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ εὐάρεστον καὶ τέλειον: the aim is to discern God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will.
