The debt of love and fulfilling the law (13:8–10)
Says In 13:8, ὀφείλετε (opheilete, "owe") introduces the exception of mutual love. Whoever loves another has fulfilled law. Adultery, murder, theft, coveting, and any other command are summed up in neighbor-love (13:9). Love does no wrong; love is πλήρωμα (plērōma, "fullness") of law (13:10). ἀνακεφαλαιοῦται (anakephalaioutai, "is summed up") presents the commands together.
Uncertain "Owe nothing" supports a ban on borrowing; the preceding dues (13:7) support not leaving obligations unpaid. "One another" supports fellow-believer scope; "another" and the neighbor command permit any person. Fulfillment may enact the law's ethical intent (love does no wrong), summarize interpersonal demands (the command list), or express a larger covenantal account (the reference to law). These grounds do not settle the alternatives. No lean is taken here.
Implies Love does not license the listed wrongs or earn justification. See note.exegetical.Rom.3.21-Rom.3.26.righteousness-revealed and note.exegetical.Rom.12.9-Rom.12.16.genuine-love. For command forms, see note.language.Rom.13.9.decalogue and note.language.Rom.13.9-Rom.13.10.lev-19-18.
SBLGNT, WH, Treg, NA28, and RP omit the false-witness command; TR adds it (var.Rom.13.9.pseudomartyreseis). RP and TR reverse the order of "love one another" and "this word"; TR also changes the reflexive pronoun. B F G omit the introductory "in the" before the love command.
Claims
- SaysMutual love is the exception to owing nothing; whoever loves another has fulfilled law. The listed commands and any other command are summed up in neighbor-love. Love does no wrong and is the fullness of law (13:8–10).
- UncertainThe absolute wording supports a borrowing ban, while preceding dues support not leaving obligations unpaid. Mutual language supports fellow-believer scope; another and the neighbor command permit wider scope. Fulfillment may be ethical enactment, interpersonal summary, or a larger covenantal account; each has textual grounds, but none is selected. No lean is taken here.
- ImpliesLove does not license the listed wrongs, and fulfilling the law here is not said to earn justification.
