χρηστότης, ἀνοχή, μακροθυμία: kindness, forbearance, patience
Says One genitive head, τοῦ πλούτου ("the riches"), governs three nouns: τῆς χρηστότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας (BSB "His kindness, tolerance, and patience"). καταφρονεῖς ("you disregard") takes the genitive. The participle ἀγνοῶν gives the reason: not knowing ὅτι τὸ χρηστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς μετάνοιάν σε ἄγει.
Abbott-Smith glosses χρηστότης (chrēstotēs) "goodness of heart, kindness" (Rom 2:4); ἀνοχή (anochē) "forbearance, delay of punishment" (Rom 2:4; 3:25); and μακροθυμία (makrothymia) "patience, longsuffering," listing Rom 2:4 under God's forbearance. He adds that ἀνοχή "is the result and expression of" μακροθυμία.
Says τὸ χρηστόν is the neuter adjective used as a noun, "the kindness" of God, picking up χρηστότης. ἄγει is present: it "leads."
Implies God's delay is not indifference. ἀνοχή recurs at Rom 3:25 (SBLGNT 3:26), where God in his forbearance passed over former sins with the cross in view. The forbearance of 2:4 is a pause with a purpose, not a cancellation of judgment (2:5).
Uncertain Whether ἄγει is conative ("is trying to lead") or simply describes the direction of God's kindness. Either way 2:4 does not say that everyone so led repents: 2:5 describes the one who refuses.
Claims
- Says2:4 asks whether the hearer despises the riches of God's kindness, forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness leads to repentance.
- ImpliesGod's forbearance is purposeful delay, not cancellation of judgment (2:5; 3:25).
- UncertainConative or descriptive force of ἄγει; in either case not all who are led repent (2:5).
