τοῖς μὲν καθ᾽ ὑπομονὴν ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ (2:7) and the chiasm of 2:6–11
Says In 2:7 τοῖς μέν is a dative after ἀποδώσει (2:6), and ζωὴν αἰώνιον is its object. The participle ζητοῦσιν ("who seek") takes the objects δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν. καθ᾽ ὑπομονὴν ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ is adverbial: they seek "by perseverance in good work" (BSB "by perseverance in doing good"). Abbott-Smith lists Rom 2:7 under ὑπομονή, "patient enduring, endurance," and notes that it "denotes not merely endurance but perseverance."
Says In 2:8 the construction breaks off: ὀργὴ καὶ θυμός is nominative, so "there will be" must be supplied (BSB).
Implies 2:6–11 forms a chiasm. The reasoning: two statements of God's justice frame it, and the outcomes are stated twice in reverse order, with verbal links between the pairs: - A (2:6): God repays each according to his deeds. - B (2:7): to those who persevere in good work, eternal life. - C (2:8): to the self-seeking who disobey the truth, wrath and anger. - C′ (2:9): trouble and distress on everyone who does evil, Jew first and Greek. - B′ (2:10): glory, honor and peace to everyone who does good, Jew first and Greek. - A′ (2:11): οὐ γάρ ἐστιν προσωπολημψία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ.
Says The links: δόξαν καὶ τιμήν (2:7) and δόξα … καὶ τιμή (2:10); ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ (2:7) and τῷ ἐργαζομένῳ τὸ ἀγαθόν (2:10).
Implies The frame makes impartiality (2:11) the point; πρῶτον gives the Jew priority in judgment as in blessing, not exemption. Who the persevering of 2:7 are: note.language.Rom.2.6.kata-ta-erga.
