Rom 3:4: Ps 51:4 (MT and LXX) and Ps 116:11
Says Rom 3:4b quotes Ps 51:4 (MT 51:6; LXX 50:6) after καθὼς γέγραπται. The MT reads לְמַעַן תִּצְדַּק בְּדָבְרֶךָ תִּזְכֶּה בְשָׁפְטֶךָ (lema'an titsdaq bedovrekha tizkeh veshoftekha, "so that you are in the right when you speak, blameless when you judge"; BDB p. 1047). Swete's LXX reads ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου, καὶ νικήσῃς ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε.
Says Paul follows the LXX: Ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου καὶ νικήσεις ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε. The LXX differs from the MT in three places: "be justified" for "be in the right," "prevail" for "be blameless," and an infinitive with σε for "when you judge."
Swete's apparatus records no variant at Ps 50:6. The νικήσεις/νικήσῃς variant in Romans is in var.Rom.3.4.nikeseis, and the voice of κρίνεσθαί σε is in note.language.Rom.3.3.apistia-pistis-theou.
Says Rom 3:4a, πᾶς δὲ ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης, has the words of LXX Ps 115:2 (MT and ENG 116:11), Πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης, plus δέ. The MT has כָּל־הָאָדָם כֹּזֵב (kol-ha'adam kozev, "every man is a liar").
Implies Paul takes over the psalm's words without a citation formula. With David's confession (51:4a), they set God's truthfulness against human falsehood (3:3–4).
