παρεδόθη διὰ τὰ παραπτώματα ἡμῶν καὶ ἠγέρθη διὰ τὴν δικαίωσιν ἡμῶν (4:25)
Says 4:25 has two parallel clauses: ὃς παρεδόθη διὰ τὰ παραπτώματα (paraptōmata, "trespasses") ἡμῶν καὶ ἠγέρθη διὰ τὴν δικαίωσιν (dikaiōsin, "justification") ἡμῶν. Both use διά with the accusative, which Abbott-Smith glosses "by reason of, because of, for the sake of." God is the agent of both passives: he raised Jesus (4:24) and handed him over (8:32).
Uncertain The force of the two διά phrases. This note leans to a retrospective first phrase, "because of our trespasses," and a prospective second, "for the sake of our justification," to bring it about. Grounds: Abbott-Smith's range for διά with the accusative includes "for the sake of," and Paul ties justification to the risen Christ: it is credited to those who believe in the God who raised him (4:24), the risen Christ answers condemnation (8:34), and without the resurrection "you are still in your sins" (1 Cor 15:17, BSB). The alternative reads both as retrospective, "raised because our justification had been secured": the two clauses are strictly parallel, and 5:9 says believers "have now been justified by His blood" (BSB). BSB's "raised to life for our justification" fits the lean.
Says δικαίωσις occurs in the NT only here and in 5:18. Abbott-Smith defines it as "the act of pronouncing righteous, justification, acquittal." παράπτωμα recurs in 5:15–20.
Uncertain An echo of Isa 53:12 in παρεδόθη with sins is probable, not established; the alternative is a traditional formula. The Isaiah wording is compared in the Hebrew Scholar's cross-reference.
Claims

- UncertainWhether the first διά is retrospective and the second prospective, 'for the sake of our justification' (lean; Abbott-Smith's 'for the sake of'; justification tied to the risen Christ, 4:24; 8:34; 1 Cor 15:17), or both retrospective, 'because our justification had been secured' (alternative; the strict parallel of the clauses; justified by his blood, 5:9).
- Saysδικαίωσις, the act of pronouncing righteous, occurs in the NT only at 4:25 and 5:18.
- UncertainWhether 4:25a echoes Isa 53:12 (lean: probable) or uses a traditional formula (alternative).
