ἀνθρώπινον λέγω … εἰς ἁγιασμόν … τὰ ὀψώνια … τὸ χάρισμα (6:19–23)

Says ἀνθρώπινον λέγω (6:19): Abbott-Smith, "I speak in human fashion," because of the weakness of the flesh. Members once presented δοῦλα (doula, "as slaves") to impurity are now to be presented to righteousness εἰς ἁγιασμόν (hagiasmon). τὸ τέλος (telos), the outcome, is death for the old service (6:21) and eternal life for slavery to God (6:22).

Uncertain ἁγιασμός. This note leans to the process, "sanctification": Abbott-Smith treats the -μός noun as "properly the process … rather than the resultant state" and lists Rom 6:19, 22 "strictly" so. The alternative is the resulting state, "holiness" (BSB), since εἰς gives a goal.

Says 6:23 contrasts τὰ ὀψώνια (opsōnia, "wages") of sin, which is death, with τὸ χάρισμα (charisma, "free gift," lex.G5486) of God, eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Implies Eternal life is an unearned gift in Christ: death is earned as wages, life is given, as in 4:4–5 and 5:15–17 (note.language.Rom.4.2-Rom.4.5.logizomai-misthos; note.language.Rom.5.15-Rom.5.19.dikaioma-kathistemi). Sanctification is the fruit on the way to that life, not its ground.
