ὁ παλαιὸς ἡμῶν ἄνθρωπος συνεσταυρώθη … δεδικαίωται ἀπὸ τῆς ἁμαρτίας (6:6–7)

Says ὁ παλαιὸς ἡμῶν ἄνθρωπος (palaios anthrōpos, "old self") συνεσταυρώθη (synestaurōthē, aorist passive, "was crucified with"), so that τὸ σῶμα τῆς ἁμαρτίας might be rendered powerless (καταργέω, lex.G2673) and we no longer serve sin. Compare Eph 4:22; Col 3:9.

Uncertain A definitive break or a process. This note leans to definitive, once for all. Grounds: the aorist matches ἀπεθάνομεν (6:2) and ἐβαπτίσθημεν (6:3), and Col 3:9 uses an aorist participle, having put off the old self. The alternative is an ongoing process: Eph 4:22–24 urges putting off the old self, and 6:12–13 still command.

Uncertain τὸ σῶμα τῆς ἁμαρτίας (sōma tēs hamartias). This note leans to the bodily person as ruled by sin: Abbott-Smith lists it with σῶμα τοῦ θανάτου (7:24) as a Hebraistic genitive of definition, and 6:12 places sin's reign ἐν τῷ θνητῷ ὑμῶν σώματι. The alternative takes σῶμα figuratively, sin as a whole mass or organism (Calvin on 6:6, by reference).

Uncertain ὁ γὰρ ἀποθανὼν δεδικαίωται (dedikaiōtai) ἀπὸ τῆς ἁμαρτίας. This note leans to forensic acquittal. Grounds: Abbott-Smith places this verse, with Acts 13:39 (δικαιόω ἀπό, acquittal from sins), under "to declare, pronounce righteous," and δικαιόω is forensic elsewhere in Romans (3:24–28; 4:5; 5:1, 9). The alternative is release from sin's power, "has been freed from sin" (BSB): slavery to sin is the context (6:6), and 6:18, 22 use ἐλευθερωθέντες ἀπὸ τῆς ἁμαρτίας.

Implies Union with Christ breaks sin's reign without teaching sinless perfection: the aim is "no longer to serve sin," and 6:12–13 still command resistance.
