οὐδὲν … κατάκριμα … περὶ ἁμαρτίας … τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ νόμου (8:1–4)

Says Οὐδὲν ἄρα νῦν κατάκριμα (ouden ara nyn katakrima): "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (8:1, BSB). The noun takes up 5:16, 18 (lex.G2631), and God κατέκρινε (katekrine, "condemned") sin in the flesh (8:3; lex.G2632). On the longer ending of 8:1 see var.Rom.8.1.me-kata-sarka.

Uncertain καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας (peri hamartias, 8:3). This note leans to the sacrificial sense, "as an offering for sin" (BSB): the LXX uses περὶ ἁμαρτίας for the sin offering (Lev 5:6–7; compare Isa 53:10), and the clause describes how God dealt with sin in the Son's flesh. The alternative is the general "concerning sin," "to deal with sin": the phrase is common in that plain sense, as in Lev 5:6–7 itself ("for his sin").

Uncertain ἵνα τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ νόμου πληρωθῇ ἐν ἡμῖν (to dikaiōma, "the righteous standard," 8:4, BSB). The singular treats the law's demand as one whole (plural in 2:26; lex.G1345). This note leans to both Christ's righteousness counted to believers and the obedience the Spirit produces: the passive verb and ἐν ἡμῖν, "in us," follow on God's act in 8:3, and the walk "according to the Spirit" follows. The alternatives take one side only: counted righteousness alone (5:18–19), or Spirit-enabled obedience alone (13:8–10). On any reading, justification remains by faith apart from works (3:28; 4:5).

Claims

  • SaysThere is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and God condemned sin in the flesh (8:1, 3).
  • UncertainWhether περὶ ἁμαρτίας (8:3) means 'as a sin offering' (lean; the LXX term in Lev 5:6–7; Isa 53:10) or generally 'concerning sin' (alternative; the common plain use).
  • UncertainWhether the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us (8:4) by Christ's righteousness counted to us, by Spirit-enabled obedience, or both (lean: both; passive verb after 8:3, then the walk clause); justification remains by faith apart from works (3:28; 4:5).
