συναντιλαμβάνεται … ὑπερεντυγχάνει στεναγμοῖς ἀλαλήτοις (8:26–27)
Says "The Spirit helps us in our weakness" (8:26, BSB): συναντιλαμβάνεται (synantilambanetai), to take hold together with, help in bearing (Abbott-Smith; lex.G4878). Since we do not know what to pray as we ought, αὐτὸ τὸ πνεῦμα (auto to pneuma, "the Spirit Himself") ὑπερεντυγχάνει (hyperentynchanei, "intercedes," NT only here; lex.G5241), and he who searches hearts knows the Spirit's mind, "because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God" (8:27, BSB).
Uncertain στεναγμοῖς ἀλαλήτοις (stenagmois alalētois, "with groans too deep for words," BSB; lex.G4726; lex.G215). ἀλάλητος can mean "not uttered" or "not able to be uttered." There is no team lean; the main views are: (1) the Spirit's own groaning, unheard by us, since αὐτὸ τὸ πνεῦμα is the subject and God knows "the mind of the Spirit" (8:27); (2) the believers' own wordless sighs, which the Spirit prompts and takes up, echoing στενάζομεν (stenazomen, "we groan") in 8:23; (3) speaking in tongues, where the spirit prays without the mind's understanding (compare 1 Cor 14:14–15).
