Textual: Hab 2:4b, בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ / ἐκ πίστεώς μου

Textual: Hab 2:4b (variant unit: בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ / ἐκ πίστεώς μου) - In text: בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ ("by his faithfulness"): MT (WLC). = MT - Alternative: ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεώς μου ζήσεται (ho de dikaios ek pisteōs mou zēsetai, "the righteous will live by my faithfulness"): LXX (Swete). Swete's apparatus: Codex A adds μου after δίκαιος; Swete records no change at πίστεώς μου; A is widely reported as δίκαιός μου ἐκ πίστεως (by reference; not checked against an apparatus). - NT forms: Rom 1:17 and Gal 3:11 have no pronoun. Heb 10:38 reads ὁ δὲ δίκαιός μου ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται: μου after δίκαιος, as in A, but not after πίστεως. - Evidence: The LXX (2nd century BC) is older than our MT manuscripts, but age does not decide. 1QpHab (late 1st century BC; VIII 1–3, by reference) applies the verse to the Law-keepers' own faithfulness, presupposing a human, third-person referent. Vav and yod are easily confused in the square script, so the LXX may reflect a 1cs suffix or be interpretive; it is explicable from the MT. - Decision: MT, confidence medium. - Says/Implies: Says The 3ms suffix agrees with וְצַדִּיק (vetsaddiq), the nearest masculine singular noun. Uncertain The team takes the righteous one: the nearest antecedent, contrasting with the proud one's נַפְשׁוֹ (nafsho, "his soul," 2:4a). The vision (חָזוֹן, khazon, masculine: "by its reliability") ranks well below. God is very unlikely: God speaks in 2:2–5, so "his" would be "my." Implies Paul's pronoun-less form fits the MT's human referent.

Claims

  • UncertainAntecedent: the righteous one (team); the vision ranks well below; God is very unlikely, since God speaks in 2:2–5.
  • ImpliesPaul's pronoun-less form fits the MT's human referent.
