ἐκδικέω ekdikeō
vindicate · avenge · give justice
Team definition
From ἔκδικος (ekdikos, "one who exacts justice"). With an accusative of a person it can mean to vindicate or defend (Luke 18:3, 5), or to avenge, including the reflexive ἑαυτούς (heautous, "yourselves") at Rom 12:19. With an accusative of a thing it means to punish or avenge that thing (2 Cor 10:6; Rev 6:10; 19:2). The Septuagint uses it for several Hebrew verbs of visiting, avenging, and judging.
