Editions (verified 2026-10-28): the SBLGNT apparatus has ὅτι with WH, Treg, and NA28, against Καί in RP 2005 (RP 2018 identical). Scrivener's TR reads καί. The witness lists are representative, not exhaustive. Codex D is not cited because its Greek text of John is lacking from 1:16. For the Curetonian Syriac, Burkitt's English reads "And from his fulness" (1:425). The Syriac conjunction is taken to render καί.

External: ὅτι has the early papyri and the leading Alexandrian witnesses.

Internal: καί probably arose because 1:15 (which SBLGNT prints in parentheses) seemed to interrupt the sense. A scribe linking 1:16 to the Baptist's words, or smoothing a series of ὅτι clauses (1:15, 16, 17), would tend to write καί.

Effect: with ὅτι, 1:16 explains 1:14, and 1:15 is parenthetical. With καί, 1:16 could continue the Baptist's testimony. BSB leaves the connective untranslated ("From His fullness…").
