Wake, lay aside the dark, and put on Christ (Romans 13:11–14)

Says Salvation is nearer than at first belief; night is nearly over and the day has drawn near (13:11–12). Paul calls for waking, putting off dark deeds, putting on light’s armor and rejecting the vices of 13:13. “Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh” (13:14, BSB).

The waking unit has you/us and word-order alternatives (var.Rom.13.11.hymas-hemas). At 13:12, ἀποβαλώμεθα (apobalōmetha, throw off) is the provisional running reading, confidence low; ἀποθώμεθα (apothōmetha, lay aside) is the alternative (var.Rom.13.12.apobalometha). BSB’s “lay aside” conveys the shared sense, not evidence identifying a Greek verb.

Implies Nearer salvation in this context strongly suggests future consummation, not a dated deadline. Waking and clothing call for ethical conduct, not a new justification mechanism or license for coercion.

Uncertain No lean is taken here. A near-return reading appeals to “nearer” and the approaching day but cannot supply a date. Already/not-yet fulfillment connects first belief with salvation still ahead but must preserve urgency. Death’s approach gives personal urgency but remains unnamed beside shared “our salvation.” A historical-horizon reading relates urgency to public events but must establish a particular event independently. Neither a failed deadline nor a specific crisis is stated.
