ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὅτε κρίνει ὁ θεός: where 2:16 attaches, and the punctuation of 2:15–16

Says 2:16 has no main verb: ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὅτε κρίνει ὁ θεὸς τὰ κρυπτὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου διὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ.

SBLGNT and RP2018 end 2:15 with a comma, and so does Tischendorf (vol. 2, p. 372). The BSB runs 2:15 into 2:16 ("accusing or defending them on the day when God will judge"). The KJV encloses 2:13–15 in parentheses. WH print ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ, "on the day on which," with ἡμέρᾳ ὅτε in the margin (see var.Rom.2.16.hemera-hote). The present κρίνει or future κρινεῖ is a matter of accent (var.Rom.2.16.krinei); either refers to the coming day.

Uncertain What 2:16 attaches to (L22(a)): - (a) 2:15 (BSB): the inner accusing and defending comes to light on that day. The present ἐνδείκνυνται and the present participles make this harder. - (b) 2:13, with 2:14–15 as an aside: the doers "will be declared righteous" on that day. - (c) 2:12, with 2:13–15 as a parenthesis (compare the KJV): they "will be judged" (κριθήσονται) on the day when God judges (κρίνει).

This note leans to (c): κρίνει picks up κριθήσονται, and both look to the day. The main alternative is (b), since δικαιωθήσονται is also future; (a) is possible if conscience's verdict foreshadows the final one.

Says God judges τὰ κρυπτά, "the secrets." κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου ("as proclaimed by my gospel," BSB) says the gospel announces this judgment. διὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ names the agent: God judges through Christ.

Implies τὰ κρυπτά prepares for ὁ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ Ἰουδαῖος (2:29).

Claims

  • Says2:16 has no main verb and completes an earlier clause; God judges the secrets of people through Christ Jesus, as Paul's gospel announces.
  • UncertainWhether 2:16 attaches to 2:12 with 2:13–15 parenthetical (this note's lean: κρίνει picks up κριθήσονται), to 2:13 (main alternative), or to 2:15 (BSB).
  • Impliesτὰ κρυπτά in 2:16 prepares for ὁ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ Ἰουδαῖος in 2:29.
