κατάνυξις katanyxis
stupor · torpor · stupefaction
Team definition
A noun from κατανύσσω. The base sense is a pricking. In biblical Greek the word is used of torpor of mind or stupefaction, perhaps by association with the verb for nodding in sleep. In the New Testament it occurs only at Rom 11:8, πνεῦμα κατανύξεως, in a quotation: a spirit of stupor. The same Greek word stands in the Septuagint at Isa 29:10 and Ps 60:3 (LXX 59:3).
