οἰκουμένη oikoumenē
inhabited world · the world
Team definition
The inhabited earth (feminine participle of οἰκέω, with γῆ understood). Classical use often meant the Greek world as distinct from other lands; later writers can mean the Roman world, and the LXX and NT also the whole inhabited earth (Abbott-Smith; Dodson). In Rom 10:18 it is the reach of the quoted “words”: to the ends of the world.
