προφητεία prophēteia
prophecy · prophesying
Team definition
The gift, and the exercise of the gift, of declaring or interpreting the divine will and purpose: prophecy or prophesying. It is used of Old Testament prophecy (Matt 13:14; 2 Pet 1:20–21) and of prophecy in the churches (Rom 12:6; 1 Cor 12:10; 13:2; 14:6, 22; 1 Tim 4:14). The plural can name prophetic utterances (1 Cor 13:8; 1 Thess 5:20). Rom 12:6 lists προφητείαν among differing gifts and qualifies its use with κατὰ τὴν ἀναλογίαν τῆς πίστεως. What that qualifying phrase means is a question of context, not a second sense of προφητεία.
