ῥίζα rhiza
root · shoot · source
Team definition
A root, literally, as of a tree (Matt 3:10; Mark 11:20), including the idiom of having a root. Metaphorically it is a cause, origin, or source, of things or of persons. Of persons it can name ancestors, as in Rom 11:16–18, where ἡ ῥίζα is holy and supports the branches. It can also name what springs from a root, a shoot or offspring (Rom 15:12; Rev 5:5; 22:16). Which person or group the root in Rom 11:16–18 denotes is a question of context, not of the lexicon entry alone.
