σκάνδαλον skandalon
snare · stumbling block · cause of falling
Team definition
Properly the stick that springs a trap, hence a snare or a stumbling block. Metaphorically it is what causes a person to trip, err, or sin, whether a person or a thing. In Rom 11:9, in a quotation, the table is to become εἰς σκάνδαλον, a stumbling block, alongside a snare, a trap, and a retribution. The word is also used of Christ crucified (1 Cor 1:23) and of the cross (Gal 5:11). It is distinct from πρόσκομμα, though the two can stand near each other.
