σωφρονέω sōphroneō
be of sound mind · be sober-minded · be self-controlled
Team definition
From σώφρων: to be of sound mind or in one's right mind, and more broadly to be temperate, discreet, or self-controlled. Narrative uses contrast it with being out of one's senses (Mark 5:15; Luke 8:35; cf. 2 Cor 5:13). Exhortations use it of sober self-control (Titus 2:6; 1 Pet 4:7). In Rom 12:3 it is the goal of thinking (φρονεῖν εἰς τὸ σωφρονεῖν), set opposite ὑπερφρονεῖν. The verb names sound or sober judgment; it does not define the measure that follows in the same verse.
