ὑπερφρονέω hyperphroneō
think too highly · be over-proud · overlook
Team definition
To think above the proper level: be over-proud or high-minded. A separate classical sense is to overlook or think slightly of. In Rom 12:3 the negated infinitive stands in a wordplay with φρονεῖν and σωφρονεῖν: μὴ ὑπερφρονεῖν παρ’ ὃ δεῖ φρονεῖν, not to think more highly than one ought to think. The comparative limit is the clause παρ’ ὃ δεῖ, not a quantity supplied by the verb itself.
