The olive tree: root, graft, and the warning not to boast (Romans 11:16–24)
Says "if the root is holy, so are the branches" (11:16, BSB). A "wild olive shoot" was grafted in "to share in the nourishment of the olive root" (11:17, BSB). "do not boast over those branches" (11:18, BSB). "They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith" (11:20, BSB). The shoot was grafted "contrary to nature" (11:24, BSB). The grafting picture does not itself fix the meaning (see note.historical.Rom.11.1-Rom.11.36.olive-grafting).
Uncertain Who the root is: the patriarchs, Abraham, Christ, or Israel's covenant. This note leans to the patriarchs: ῥίζα (rhiza, "root") can name ancestors, and Israel is loved "on account of the patriarchs" (11:28, BSB). Christ and Israel's covenant are the alternatives (lex.G4491; note.language.Rom.11.17-Rom.11.24.rhiza-enkentrizo-apotomia).
Uncertain What "Otherwise you also will be cut off" (11:22, BSB) threatens. No lean is taken here. - Reformed perseverance: the warning is a means by which God keeps true believers; those cut off did not stand by saving faith. Grounds: "you stand by faith" (11:20, BSB); "if you continue in His kindness" (11:22, BSB); 11:29. - Arminian and Wesleyan: continuing is a real condition, and a believer who does not continue can be cut off. Grounds: the condition ἐάν ("if") and the ἐπεί ("otherwise") clause of 11:22; "be afraid" (11:20, BSB). - Corporate: the warning is to Gentile Christianity as a body, not a verdict on each person. Grounds: "I am speaking to you Gentiles" (11:13, BSB); the singular "you" set against Israel's branches (11:17–18); branches of one tree. See note.exegetical.Rom.8.28-Rom.8.39.can-believers-fall-away.
Claims
- SaysIf the root is holy, so are the branches; a wild olive shoot was grafted in contrary to nature; Gentile believers must not boast over the branches; the branches were broken off for unbelief and the Gentile believer stands by faith (11:16–18, 20, 24).
- UncertainWho the root is; lean to the patriarchs (ῥίζα can name ancestors; 11:28), alternatives Christ and Israel's covenant.
- UncertainWhether the warning of 11:22 is a means of perseverance, a real condition for each believer, or a warning to Gentile Christianity as a body; no lean.
